“I don’t feel this”

“I don’t think this is working”

“I must not be doing this right”

I hear a lot of that in my line of work.

The world portrays exercise as an all out war against the weights and something that inflicts damage on your body. Commercials are filled with sweat drenched athletes lying on the ground, barely surviving their workouts, only to do it again next time.

Due to this, many people track the effectiveness of their workouts with only how fast their heart is beating, how much burn they feel, and how sore they are the next day.

I’m not saying simply getting your sweat on for the sake of it is bad; I too enjoy moving for the sake of exercise and a day of limping up and down stairs once in awhile. What I’m saying is that not all exercises are meant to bring about one of those results. Sometimes an exercise can be used in an attempt for you NOT to feel something.

We not only train people, but educate them that many exercises are done to build a foundation. Maybe you’re doing a plank for only 3 breaths to get used to the position, or deadlifting a broomstick to improve technique. It may seem easy, but just like learning the keys before playing the piano, it’s necessary.

If you don’t sweat, it’s okay. If your head doesn’t spin, it’s okay. All is not lost.

You wouldn’t just play a bunch of keys and call it a song simply because the piano made a sound would you?

Don’t just train to be tired, train to be better.
